# Known Lua and Luau Obfuscators: A Reference

> An overview of the most widely used open-source and commercial Lua and Luau obfuscation tools, their techniques, strengths, and limitations.

This page surveys the most well-known Lua and Luau obfuscators. Understanding what existing tools provide, how they work, and where they fall short helps you evaluate their protection level and choose or build the right solution for your use case. Each tool represents a different trade-off between security, performance, maintainability, and cost.

## Luau and Roblox Obfuscators

The Roblox ecosystem has produced the most active obfuscator development due to its large user base and the high value of protected scripts. These tools target Luau specifically and often include Roblox-specific features.

### Ironbrew2

Ironbrew2 is one of the most popular Roblox obfuscators. It is open source and written in Lua.

> **Techniques**
>
> Register-based VM, string encryption with multiple cipher options, control flow obfuscation, and variable renaming.

> **Strengths**
>
> Widely tested, actively used in the community, and provides strong baseline protection for Roblox scripts.

The VM is implemented in Lua and embedded directly in the output script. Because Ironbrew2 is open source, its algorithms are public and deobfuscators have been built for it. However, the register-based VM architecture still requires significant effort to reverse. It remains a solid choice for developers who want proven, community-tested protection without cost.

### Prometheus

Prometheus is a modular Lua 5.1 and Luau obfuscator written in Lua. It is designed around a plugin system with interchangeable transformation passes.

> **Techniques**
>
> Variable renaming, string encryption, control flow obfuscation, constant obfuscation, and a custom VM wrapper.

> **Strengths**
>
> Modular architecture lets you enable only the transforms you need. Strong open-source community support.

Prometheus allows you to compose a custom pipeline from individual passes. You can apply renaming without VM virtualization, or add the VM wrapper only to sensitive functions. This flexibility makes it suitable for projects with varying protection needs across different modules.

### Moonsec

Moonsec (versions 2 and 3) is a commercial Roblox obfuscator. It is closed source.

> **Techniques**
>
> Custom VM with opcode remapping and encrypted bytecode.

> **Strengths**
>
> Considered one of the stronger commercial options at release. Encrypted bytecode makes static extraction difficult.

Moonsec is no longer actively maintained according to community reports. While it provided strong protection during its active period, the lack of updates means newer deobfuscation techniques may eventually reduce its effectiveness. Existing users should evaluate whether continued reliance on an unmaintained tool meets their security requirements.

### Luraph

Luraph is a commercial Roblox obfuscator that uses a unique VM architecture and updates frequently.

> **Techniques**
>
> Proprietary VM architecture with regular updates to counter new deobfuscators.

> **Strengths**
>
> Closed source and actively maintained. Frequent updates stay ahead of public deobfuscation tools.

Luraph's primary advantage is its update cadence. Because it is closed source and the authors regularly change the VM architecture, public deobfuscators lag behind. This makes it one of the stronger commercial options for Roblox developers who need ongoing protection.

## Standard Lua Obfuscators

Outside the Roblox ecosystem, several tools target standard Lua 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, and LuaJIT.

### darklua

darklua is an open-source Lua and Luau source transformation tool written in Rust.

> **Techniques**
>
> Bundling, minification, and configurable source transformations.

> **Strengths**
>
> Fast, reliable, and programmable. Ideal as the foundation for a custom obfuscation pipeline.

darklua is not a full obfuscator in the sense of VM virtualization or control flow flattening. It provides bundling and minification with configurable transforms. Developers often use darklua as the base layer of a custom pipeline, adding their own string encryption, renaming, and control flow passes on top.

### luaobfuscator.com

luaobfuscator.com is an online Lua obfuscator that applies basic transformations through a web interface.

> **Techniques**
>
> Variable renaming, string encoding, and control flow changes.

> **Strengths**
>
> Convenient for quick obfuscation without installing tools. Accessible from any browser.

The algorithm used by luaobfuscator.com is known and documented. It can be reversed by determined analysts and is not suitable for protecting high-value logic. Use it for casual obfuscation where convenience matters more than security.

### lua-obfuscator (Community Tools)

Numerous community projects on GitHub provide Lua obfuscation with varying quality. Most apply simple renaming and string encoding without a full VM or control flow flattening.

> **Techniques**
>
> Simple renaming, string encoding, and occasional basic control flow.

> **Strengths**
>
> Free, open source, and easy to modify for custom needs.

These tools are useful for learning and experimentation. They are generally not suitable for production use against skilled reverse engineers because they lack the depth of protection provided by VM-based obfuscators.

## Evaluating an Obfuscator

When choosing an obfuscator, assess it against the following criteria rather than relying on marketing claims.

### What to Look For

| Criterion | Why It Matters | Questions to Ask |
| - | - | - |
| VM Strength | A custom instruction set forces analysts to reverse the VM before analyzing your logic | Does it use a register-based or stack-based VM? Is the instruction set randomized per build? |
| String Encryption | Hides plaintext secrets from static inspection | What cipher is used? Is the key randomized per build? |
| Control Flow | Flattening and opaque predicates confuse decompilers | Does it flatten loops and conditionals into state machines? |
| Update Frequency | Obfuscators are reverse-engineered over time | When was the last update? Does the author respond to new deobfuscators? |

### Red Flags

Avoid obfuscators that exhibit these weaknesses:

* No VM: source-level-only obfuscation is trivially reversible with a Lua beautifier.
* Only variable renaming: renaming can be undone with semantic analysis or manual reading.
* No string encryption: all secrets remain visible in the bytecode constant table.
* Open source with no customization: if the algorithm is public and you use it unchanged, deobfuscators already exist.

### Open Source vs. Closed Source

An open-source obfuscator provides transparency and community verification but also exposes its algorithms to attackers. A closed-source obfuscator hides its methods but requires trust in the vendor. The most effective approach is often to use an open-source tool as a base and add a custom, private layer that attackers have not seen before.

## Building vs. Buying

You have three strategic options for obtaining obfuscation: build your own, use an existing tool, or combine both.

### Build Your Own

Building a custom obfuscator gives you full control over the protection scheme. Your unique algorithms have not been analyzed by attackers, which raises the cost of reverse engineering significantly. However, this requires substantial engineering effort: implementing a VM, designing control flow transforms, and maintaining the tool over time.

### Buy or Use Open Source

Using an existing tool is faster to deploy and benefits from community testing. The trade-off is that public algorithms are eventually reversed. Commercial tools with active maintenance (like Luraph) mitigate this by updating frequently, but they still rely on a shared scheme that dedicated attackers can target.

### Hybrid Approach

The hybrid approach uses an open-source tool as a foundation and adds a custom layer that differentiates your output. For example:

1. Use Prometheus or darklua for bundling, renaming, and basic transforms.
2. Add a custom VM wrapper with a unique instruction set per build.
3. Use a custom XOR key for string encryption that changes per release.

This gives you the speed of existing tooling plus the security of a private scheme. The custom layer does not need to be large: even a simple custom encoding or a private opaque predicate pattern adds entropy that public deobfuscators are not designed to handle.

> [!NOTE]
>
> No obfuscator listed here provides absolute protection. All have been or will be partially reversed given enough time and motivation. The goal of obfuscation is to raise the cost of reversing above the attacker's motivation, not to make reversal impossible.

> **Are these tools safe to use?**
>
> Ironbrew2 and Prometheus are open source and widely used in the Roblox community. Their code is public and can be audited. Commercial tools like Luraph and Moonsec process your source code on their infrastructure or through their binaries. Before using a commercial obfuscator, evaluate the vendor's trustworthiness, privacy policy, and community reputation. You are sending your source code to a third party, which introduces a confidentiality risk that does not exist with local open-source tools.
