# Identifier Flooding and Namespace Pollution in Lua/Luau

> Overwhelm reverse engineers with thousands of fake, unused, and misleading identifiers by flooding the Lua or Luau global namespace and local scopes.

Even after renaming all variables to short meaningless strings, a script with few identifiers is easy to analyze. Identifier flooding generates massive numbers of dummy identifiers to drown out real ones. When an analyst dumps globals or lists locals, they face hundreds or thousands of entries instead of a clean handful. This page covers every flooding technique for Lua and Luau, with complete code examples.

## Global Namespace Flooding

In Lua, `_G` is the global table. Polluting it makes global dumps useless to an analyst.

### Generating Fake Globals in a Loop

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
-- Generate 200+ fake global assignments
for i = 1, 250 do
    _G["_" .. tostring(i)] = nil
    _G["__" .. tostring(i)] = nil
    _G["_a" .. tostring(i)] = nil
    _G["_b" .. tostring(i)] = nil
end
```

### Mixed Fake Globals with Plausible Names

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
local fakeNames = {
    "config", "settings", "options", "flags", "params",
    "cache", "buffer", "store", "registry", "state",
    "handler", "callback", "listener", "observer", "watcher",
    "manager", "controller", "service", "provider", "factory",
}
for _, prefix in ipairs(fakeNames) do
    for i = 1, 10 do
        _G[prefix .. "_" .. i] = nil
    end
end
```

### Globals with Fake Values

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
-- Make them look initialized
_G._config_1 = {}
_G._config_2 = {enabled = true}
_G._cache_1 = setmetatable({}, {__mode = "k"})
_G._state_1 = 0
_G._handler_1 = function() end
```

> [!WARNING]
>
> In Luau and Roblox, `_G` is the shared global table across all scripts in the same context. Flooding `_G` in a multiplayer game affects all scripts. Use local flooding and table flooding instead for Luau, or flood `_G` only in single-player/local contexts where side effects are contained.

## Local Variable Flooding

Declare dozens of unused locals at the start of every function.

### Function Preamble with Unused Locals

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
local function realFunction(a, b)
    local _x1, _x2, _x3 = nil, nil, nil
    local _x4, _x5, _x6 = nil, nil, nil
    local _x7, _x8, _x9 = nil, nil, nil
    local _x10, _x11, _x12 = nil, nil, nil
    local _x13, _x14, _x15 = nil, nil, nil
    local _x16, _x17, _x18 = nil, nil, nil
    local _x19, _x20 = nil, nil
    -- real logic starts here
    return a + b
end
```

### Locals with Fake Initializations

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
local function realFunction(data)
    local _a1 = 0
    local _a2 = ""
    local _a3 = {}
    local _a4 = false
    local _a5 = function() end
    local _a6 = coroutine.create(function() end)
    local _a7 = math.random(1, 100)
    local _a8 = os.clock()
    local _a9 = string.rep("x", 10)
    local _a10 = table.insert
    -- real logic
    return processData(data)
end
```

### Lua Local Variable Limit

Lua 5.1 has a hard limit of 200 local variables per function. Stay well under this limit to avoid compile errors.

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
-- Safe: 30 locals
-- Risky: 180+ locals
-- Fatal: 200+ locals in Lua 5.1
```

## Fake Require/Import Flooding

Generate fake module imports that look real but do nothing.

### Roblox Luau: Fake Service Gets

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
-- Fake service imports that are never used
local _ = game:GetService("HttpService")
local _ = game:GetService("MarketplaceService")
local _ = game:GetService("TeleportService")
local _ = game:GetService("MessagingService")
local _ = game:GetService("MemoryStoreService")
local _ = game:GetService("PolicyService")
local _ = game:GetService("GroupService")
local _ = game:GetService("BadgeService")
```

### Standard Lua: Fake Requires with pcall

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
-- Fake requires that fail silently
local _ = pcall(function()
    return require("config.security")
end)
local _ = pcall(function()
    return require("utils.crypto")
end)
local _ = pcall(function()
    return require("core.telemetry")
end)
local _ = pcall(function()
    return require("plugins.observer")
end)
```

### pcall Wrapper Pattern

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
local function safeRequire(moduleName)
    local ok, result = pcall(require, moduleName)
    if ok then
        return result
    end
    return nil
end
-- Fake imports
local _module1 = safeRequire("core.auth")
local _module2 = safeRequire("core.logging")
local _module3 = safeRequire("core.metrics")
local _module4 = safeRequire("core.audit")
```

## Table Key Flooding

Add hundreds of fake keys to important tables so the table dump is enormous.

### Fake Keys on Module Tables

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
local module = {}
-- Real keys
module.init = function() end
module.process = function() end
module.cleanup = function() end
-- Fake keys
for i = 1, 100 do
    module["_fake" .. i] = nil
    module["_decoy" .. i] = {}
    module["_unused" .. i] = function() end
end
-- Mixed fake and real
module._internal = nil
module._state = nil
module._buffer = nil
module._cache = nil
module._handler = nil
module._listener = nil
```

### Fake Keys with Plausible Values

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
-- Make fake keys look like they might be real
module._config = {debug = false, verbose = true}
module._registry = setmetatable({}, {__mode = "v"})
module._history = {}
module._flags = {enabled = true, strict = false}
module._observers = {}
```

## Function Signature Flooding

Add extra unused parameters to every function.

### Extra Unused Parameters

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
-- Before
function doThing(a, b)
    return a + b
end
-- After
function doThing(a, b, _c, _d, _e, _f)
    return a + b
end
-- Callers pass the same arguments
local result = doThing(1, 2)
-- _c, _d, _e, _f are all nil
```

### Flooded Signatures with Fake Types (Luau)

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
function processPlayer(
    player: Player,
    action: string,
    _ctx: any,
    _flags: table,
    _trace: string,
    _session: number
)
    -- real logic only uses player and action
    return performAction(player, action)
end
```

### Flooded Callbacks

```lua theme={"theme":{"light":"ayu-dark","dark":"night-owl"}}
-- Fake callback signatures
local function onEvent(data, _timestamp, _source, _priority)
    processData(data)
end
local function onUpdate(delta, _frame, _total, _avg)
    updateWorld(delta)
end
```

> [!TIP]
>
> Combine identifier flooding with variable renaming so the flooded identifiers follow the same naming scheme as real ones. If real variables are named `_a`, `_b`, `_c`, then flooded variables should use the same pattern: `_x1`, `_x2`, `_x3`. This makes them indistinguishable at a glance.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Excessive flooding increases memory usage and script parse time. In Roblox, scripts are parsed on the client. Going to tens of thousands of dummy identifiers may cause noticeable lag when loading. For most purposes, 500-1000 dummy identifiers is enough to overwhelm manual analysis without impacting performance.

> **Does Roblox filter out flooded globals?**
>
> Roblox scripts do not have access to a truly unrestricted global namespace. The `_G` table is shared across scripts in the same context, but Roblox's security model limits direct global manipulation. For Luau, prefer local flooding and table flooding over `_G` flooding. Fake service imports and local variable preambles are the safest and most effective techniques for Roblox scripts.
